Bristol Bay saw the largest total sockeye salmon run on record last year at close to 68 million fish, according to the state Department of Fish and Game. But chum salmon runs up the Nushagak River were far lower than average. The average Bristol Bay sockeye this year is smaller. That’s part of a trend over the past four decades, as increasingly smaller fish have returned to the bay amid larger salmon runs and warming oceans. As KDLG’s Brian Venua reports, everyone from processor executives to biologists now have to consider what smaller fish mean for Bristol Bay.“The size of fish has declined for their age," he said. So the size of 2-ocean fish has been declining slowly over time, and the size of 3-ocean fish has been slowly declining over time.” The sheer number of fish can lead to more competition for food in the ocean. The season’s total catch is now at 4,964,380. Egegik drifters have hauled in 81.9% of the harvest this season, and setnetters have caught 18.1%. Escapement was at 51,234 fish yesterday, for a total season escapement of 653,910 fish. The state’s action plan will be in place as long as kings are a stock of concern.
