It's easier to recruit one during Azelstan's sidequest at Pirate's Graveyard, Chapter 4 near its end. There will appear a male and female lich, both recruitable. In PSP it was useful to do the transformation ritual because you would inherit its level up bonus stats. Not much point to it anymore. #5.
