When I start a new game, I mine some copper, pay 10.000$ to the shinobi thieves to get access to beds + merchants + protection + training dummies. Once I have enough recruits, I buy a destroyed house in the Hub (storm house is the best for what I need), repair it, build a research table and 2 torch posts, that's all.

If I'm not mistaken you've got to hold right-click on the building, then the option 'repair' will show itself and it'll tell you what materials you need for the repairs. In case anyone didn't know, the mining spots around town are close enough to automate mining (and strength training) into in-house storage. Also by default the Hub isn't owned by you which PREVENTS RAIDS regardless of how much you actually invest into the town. It is the ideal starter base for those very reasons.
